Rotwand is very proud to present two young Nordic artists. Via the media of photography and video, the Finn Hannu Karjalainen and the Swede Lovisa Ringborg examine the boundaries between reality and fiction. When and how does illusion become reality and when does the construction of fiction begin? In their work both Karjalainen and Ringborg take up very decidedly the subject of painting and transform it into the medium of video or photography.

Iris Kettner

At first glance, Iris Kettner's life-size figurative sculptures appear to represent familiar-seeming, often humble figures of urban life. Shaped from tattered old clothes wrapped around wooden structures with adhesive tape and dressed in fragments of used clothes, these figures project a sense of inconspicuousness and anonymity, an impression only reinforced by their covered heads and masked faces. On closer inspection, however, the impression of familiarity is replaced by one of confusion: Kettner is not simply interested in staging figurative sculptures as those average types that are mostly overlooked.

balls & brains - kick-offs to art in football

Starting on 16th May 2008, the Helmhaus Zurich is the very place in the heart of Zurich where football and culture celebrate a harmonious relationship: In the exhibition "balls & brains", works by artists, actors and actresses and musicians are combined with journalistic research which focuses on the darker and brighter sides of football in general. In addition to this, a rich calendar of events, is offered, too.

Die Ballung und Häufung von Punkten, Linien und Achsen der Zeichnungen Irene Weingartner's lassen an die Ästhetik verformungsgerechter Bauaufnahmen denken. Bei diesen werden Raster und Punkte gesetzt, um alte verformte Bauten auszumessen. Verglichen mit diesem Verfahren machen die Zeichnungen anstelle eines aufgezeichneten architektonischen Raumes einen Körperraum lesbar.

Karen Sargsyan - theatrical and exaggerated but at the same time intimate and nearby

Within the framework of the Suzie Q projects, Birgid Uccia and Bob van Orsouw are proud to present (for the first time in Switzerland) a solo exhibition of Karen Sargsyan's sculptural works. Sargsyan was born 1973 in Yerevan (Armenia). He lives and works in Amsterdam, where he recently completed his degree in art at the Rijksakademie.

Sargsyan's expansive installations are figurative in nature. The artist renounces the usual materials and for his sculptures uses paper that he cuts into monochrome and colored forms and superposes one on the other in several layers. Sargsyan does not produce papiers coupés in the classical sense by cutting out shapes and transferring them onto a two-dimensional support. Rather, within a three-dimensional space, he liberally arranges his life-size figures into stage-like scenes. Scenes that refer back to literary models or compositional schema that are familiar from art history.

Haas & Fischer is delighted to present Canadian artist Erica Eyres (*1980, lives and works Glasgow) for the first time in Switzerland.

Erica Eyres is interested in the human condition; through her drawings and videos she examines human nature, how we perceive others, how others perceive us and how we portray ourselves to others.

In stark ballpoint pen Eyres depicts disquieting female characters that self-consciously pose for the viewer in states of undress or contrived sexual poses; awkward, clumsy, vulnerable and bashful, their flaws and blemishes are openly on display. In each instance the viewer is persuaded to engage in the power games instigated in watching and being watched, though the experience is never wholly satisfying.

Jörg Köppl und Peter Zacek arbeiten seit 1997 zusammen. Sie realisieren Performances, Interventionen und Installationen, für die sie oft auch mit weiteren Akteuren, nicht zuletzt mit dem Publikum kooperieren. In ihrer Arbeit konstruieren sie schicksalshafte Verbindungen und Abhängigkeiten, vom Material und voneinander.

Andreas Hofer, Jennifer Jordan, Hildegard Spielhofer - The Trees Bring Forth Sweet Ecstasy III

Mit der Station bei Karma International in Zürich ﬁndet die dreiteilige Ausstellungsserie von "The Trees Bring Forth Sweet Ecstasy" ihren Abschluss. Der Titel der Ausstellungen entstammt Wiliam Blakes Gedicht "The Mental Traveler". Das Thema des Lebenskreislaufes, das Blake in seinem Gedicht beschreibt – die Bewegung zwischen Leben und Tod, Liebe und Hass, Anziehung und Abstossung, übertrugen die Kuratorinnen Caroline Eggel und Christiane Rekade auch auf die Ausstellungsform: "The Trees Bring Forth Sweet Ecstasy" wanderte an drei verschiedene Orte, sie zitiert, verändert und wiederholt sich.

In den ehemaligen Lagerräumen an der Kleinstrasse 16 beim Kreuzplatz in Zürich zeigt die Galerie sam scherrer contemporary neue Werke des Schweizer Künstlers Thomas Muff.

Malen ist für Thomas Muff eine Form, Leben wahrzunehmen, seine Existenz zu realisieren. Indem er malend über das Malen nachdenkt, Farben setzt, sie nach ihrem Verhalten zu den Nachbarfarben, den darunterliegenden Farbschichten befragt, erkundet er sich selbst, erkennt, vielleicht nicht einmal im bewussten Reflektieren, aber im Vorgang des Malens, auf das er sich ganz einlässt, seinen Bezug zur Gesellschaft, seinen Ort zwischen Vergangenheit und Zukunft.
