Hugh Scott-Douglas: A Place In The Sun

Clifton Benevento is pleased to present "A Place In The Sun", the New York solo-debut of Toronto based artist, Hugh Scott-Douglas.

Drawing its title from the 1951 George Stevens’ film of the same name, A Place In The Sun, presents a new body of cyanotypes on linen.

Within cinematic history, Stevens’ film is regarded as a prime example of analog editing and is particularly well known for its long dissolves between scenes.

Natasza Niedziolka : White Shadow

Horton Gallery, Chelsea is pleased to announce White Shadow, the first New York solo exhibition by Berlin based artist Natasza Niedziolka.

Natasza Niedziolka's abstract fabric and thread works intuitively integrate enigmatic shapes and evocative colors. Following in the tradition of Dada artists such as Jean Arp, Niedziolka's fabric panels embrace the irrational. While the artist’s use of quilting and sewing connect her work with historical, democratized expressive acts, Niedziolka decidedly rejects traditional craft-art guidelines such as functionality and pictorial coherence.

landscapes encountered on his travels to the Arctic on an ice-class schooner. Like

September 10 - November 5th, 2011

Clifton Benevento is pleased to announce its first exhibition by Zak Kitnick, a show consisting of two related yet distinct bodies of work that examine the boundaries between art, décor, and utility. Looking at the intersections of commodity production and architectural space alongside that of sculpture and design, Kitnick’s work explores how these parallel worlds borrow from each other equally, acquiring and defusing each other’s potential.

Manfred Mohr: 1964-2011, Reflexions sur une esthetique programmee

It was May 11, 1971 when the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris opened the influential exhibition “Computer Graphics - Une Esthétique Programmée”. A solo exhibition by Manfred Mohr, it featured the first display in a museum of works entirely calculated and drawn by a digital (rather than analog) computer. Revolutionary for its time, these drawings were more than mere curiosities – they signaled a new era of image creation, setting in motion a trajectory of modernism and information aesthetics.

Horton Gallery, Chelsea is pleased to present Monkey Wrench, a group show featuring works by Michael Berryhill, Stacy Fisher, Hilary Harnischfeger, Sally Ross, Kate Steciw and Wallace Whitney. As the colloquial "monkey wrench" disrupts our expectations when it is thrown, the artists in this exhibition skew and recast traditional techniques of representation. By complicating modes of image-making as well as categories of artistic media, these artists build layers of visual complexity within their work.
