"Gamblers Die Broke" is the title of the first solo exhibition of the work of the Peruvian-born artist, Armando Andrade Tudela (b. 1975), to be held in Switzerland. The phrase is borrowed from "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950), a film noir by John Huston. It has been removed from its original context to be shown in a different light, a method that is essential to Andrade Tudela's work.

Guido van der Werve - On parity of days

The Dutch artist Guido van der Werve (b. 1977, Papendrecht) is presenting at Kunsthalle Basel films produced between 2003 and 2007. His carefully staged films usually revolve around events that break through the course of time and everyday routine. They take up such themes as melancholy, the romanticized figure of the creative artist, and the uncontrollable quantity of chance and link them to the rational thought processes of classical music. The dreamlike sequences with several protagonists are repeatedly interrupted by the artist's slapstick-like actions or by unexpected events.

Word Event - Group show: Curated by Maxine Kopsa & Roos Gortzak

Can a gesture be a word?

"Word Event" looks at a select group of artists who carry on a tradition of subversive methodology in their practice and attitude.

"Word Event" is a multi-level cross-sectioned exhibition of contemporary works, events, performances and informances, scores, printed matter and film. Taking George Brecht's "Word Event" (1961), a handwritten Event Card, and James Lee Byars' "The Golden Hole for Speech (The Perfect Whisper)" (1974/1981), an abstract invitation for speech, as its starting points, the exhibition attempts to displace itself by purposely seeking out confrontation and synchronization thus landing in the exhibition space as an active dialogue. "Word Event" points to a possible return of a fluxus sensibility via a new, contemporary, proverbial linguistic turn.
