Susan Philipsz und Monika Sosnowska - Sternennebel

Gebert Stiftung für Kultur

Klaus Gebert-Strasse 5
8640 Rapperswil
Exhibition
17 May 2008 - 6 July 2008

Alona Harpaz - Fields

Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery

526 W. 26th Street, Room 213
10001 New York, NY
Exhibition
9 May 2008 - 7 June 2008

Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is pleased to present "Fields", its second solo exhibition by Alona Harpaz.

Alona Harpaz' seductive surfaces negotiate the rift between figural and abstract through implied, dramatic shifts of scale. Like fractals revealing the intricately repetitive structures of organic forms, the compositions unify portraiture and ornamentation by fluidly transitioning between micro and macro views. As Christoph Tannert writes, "this kind of painting ... lets the cosmic particles around the figures gleam in psychedelic colors that sound like inwardness with no minor key." Read more...

Mika Rottenberg - Drawings

Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery

526 W. 26th Street, Room 213
10001 New York, NY
Exhibition
9 May 2008 - 7 June 2008

Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is pleased to present its second solo exhibition by Mika Rottenberg.

In Mika Rottenberg's drawings, the artist's body serves as markmaking tool, creating painterly, expressive graphic elements that both anchor and disrupt microcosmic tableaux. Expressive yet systematic, the drawings start with a vocabulary of marks which the artist continually deploys and reworks. These frenetic symbols flirt with legibility and, like worker bees, organize into structures suggestive of factories or Rube Goldberg machines. Read more...

Alfredo Pirri - Canti

Tucci Russo Studio Per l'Arte Contemporanea

Via Stamperia 9
10066 Torre Pellice (TO)
Exhibition
10 May 2008 - 3 August 2008

Through his works Alfredo Pirri incites us to pay attention to what sensible, visible, invisible surrounds us in our proceeding in a complex world, both of natural (dawn, sunset, rain, light) and of social phenomena. Light and colour are protagonists of Alfredo Pirri's gift for narrating, with manifold variations in each exhibit and in the ways the onlooker is attracted by the rhythms and tones this narration develops.

In 2003, in his personal VERSO N at Galleria Tucci Russo, the artist displayed some works composed of single and assembled elements, each being an image complete in itself and in mutual relationship, in a narrative tension that recalled the mutations of the important moments of the day, like dawn and sunset. Robin Rhode - Promenade

Tucci Russo Studio Per l'Arte Contemporanea

Via Stamperia 9
10066 Torre Pellice (TO)
Exhibition
10 May 2008 - 3 August 2008

For his first solo show in Italy, "Promenade", South African born artist Robin Rhode will present new works, all of which were realized on-site at Tucci Russo Studio Per L'Arte Contemporanea. Rhode creates an atmosphere of limbo achieved through the construct and combination of the works in the exhibition; paintings, drawings, animation, and photography are executed in monochrome black and white, illustrating not just the passing and suspension of time, but also its transcendence.

The influence of music and sound scores has been a consistent factor in Rhode's practice. Since the realization of his earlier low-fi animations, the affect of music has matured and developed coming forth as a focal point for this exhibition. "Promenade" refers to the segments or chapters of a piano concerto or composition; in Rhode's "Promenade", the compositional structure becomes visual, one that shifts from picture to picture. Jan Fabre - Is the brain the most sexy part of the body?

Deweer Art Gallery

Tiegemstraat 6A
8553 Otegem
Exhibition
11 May 2008 - 22 June 2008

Deweer Art Gallery is pleased to announce the eighth solo show by Jan Fabre at the gallery, "Is the brain the most sexy part of the body?", an exhibition with almost exclusively new works. It will be the artists first show after the opening of his show at the Louvre.
Fabre has not been out of the picture for the last couple of years. The "Homo Fabre" series of events in 2006 in Antwerp, his work at the festival d'Avignon as artistic director and his upcoming exhibition at the Louvre, for which the artist was given carte blanche in the Richelieu wing of the museum, are just some recent highlights in a career that is hardly equalled by any other contemporary artist from the Belgian scene. Erica Eyres

Galerie Haas & Fischer

Sihlhallenstrasse 19
8004 Zurich
Exhibition
10 May 2008 - 20 June 2008

Haas & Fischer is delighted to present Canadian artist Erica Eyres (*1980, lives and works Glasgow) for the first time in Switzerland.

Erica Eyres is interested in the human condition; through her drawings and videos she examines human nature, how we perceive others, how others perceive us and how we portray ourselves to others.

In stark ballpoint pen Eyres depicts disquieting female characters that self-consciously pose for the viewer in states of undress or contrived sexual poses; awkward, clumsy, vulnerable and bashful, their flaws and blemishes are openly on display. In each instance the viewer is persuaded to engage in the power games instigated in watching and being watched, though the experience is never wholly satisfying. Read more...

In the 1970s and early 1980s Rolf Winnewisser took part in all the major exhibitions featuring young Swiss artists. He was engaged in a close exchange of ideas with artist friends such as Theo Kneubühler, Aldo Walker, Martin Disler and Hugo Suter, and also stimulated and encouraged many other artists.
