Stefan Silies & Till Nachtmann - The enchanted Lieutenant
Laser-Chronicles and Blueprints
Stefan Silies and Till Nachtmann have been working as a team with lasers, rockets, LEDs, mopeds, pinhole cameras and socks in Cologne, Kassel, Leipzig, New York, Korea, in the Ruhr Area and in Belgium since 1999.
For the current exhibition their alter ego, the enchanted lieutenant, is sent on a search for the stars.
He discovers new luminaries, becomes stuck between earth and the stars; transmits messages, coated by white noise, which cannot be decoded. Meanwhile astronomy. Maps and models are being studied. Analogies with all kind of explorers getting visible: goodbye, hello Jules Verne and Gene Roddenberry. As media: the cyanotype, the blueprint. Every single step in the blueprinting process can be tailor-made and integrate provoked coincidences as own artistic quality. Hanging on the wall, they form a chart room. In the back of the room you see a greenish, artificial light. A "laserblock", which creates a dim, greenish reflection on the ground. It projects a looped sequence of bright lines on a white wall.
