Vienna - 6 May 2010 - 10 September 2010
Curated by_fabrizio plessi - LIS – RTM – IST > VIE with works by Ana Rito, Madeleine Berkhemer & Inci Eviner
The exhibition "LIS - RTM - IST > VIE" curated by the Italian installation and video artist Fabrizio Plessi, unites the points of view of three artists from different European metropolises and three very different cultures. Their works show the situation of women - which find themselves stuck between assimilation and self-identification, prejudice and exploitation, seduction and desire, dream and fantasy.
The young Portuguese artist and curator ("Femme Fatale #2" in the Modern Museum Lisbon) Ana Rito (*1978) broaches the issue of disrobement and disguise of the feminine body and attempts in "Puppet Project", an exhibition especially developed for Vienna, to place into dialogue the modern day conception of women and the construction of the gaze.
In her sculptures, video works and performances. Madeleine Berkhemer (*1973) of Rotterdam plays with social conventions from a sexual and erotic perspective, hereby confidently using her own body, challenging the voyeuristic gaze of her audience.
Inci Eviner (*1956) from Istanbul implements in her large wall installation - simultaneously being shown in the "Istanbul Modern Museum" - the refreshingly unconventional search and spirited discoveries of her "New Citizens" in otherwise rigidly traditional, cultural clichés and patterns.
