de Pury & Luxembourg is proud to present "Time of the Signs", a group show including Jimmie Durham, Kendell Geers and Dimitris Tzamouranis.

This exhibition includes unique sound sculptures by Jimmie Durham, new wall pieces and large-scale works on paper by Kendell Geers, as well as a selection of paintings on canvas and copper by Dimitris Tzamouranis.

The show brings together three artists whose work is strongly concerned with the power incorporated in signs or objects and symbols, may they originate in language, religion or mythology in the case of Kendell Geers, in traces, ephemeral or petrified in the case of Jimmie Durham or in historic artworks that have become icons in the case of Dimitris Tzamouranis.

Jimmie Durham's sculptures typically consist of a variety of found and used objects, assembled into unique creations which together with their sound confront the viewer, triggering emotions and memories that are as individual and different for each person as the works are themselves.

Making explicit use of power connotated objects like batons, Kendell Geers uses their innate symbolism to create works of beauty like "Cardiac Arrest", thus questioning both, the symbol of love as much as the meaning of batons. The power of the sexes is the theme of two large works on paper that were also created specifically for this show. More tribal at first sight seem the sculptures wrapped in emergency tape, yet again we find ourselves thrown off at closer inspection as various layers of meaning, references, histories and quotations become apparent.

Dimitris Tzamouranis' paintings like "Clandestini (Raft of the Medusa)" portray how the artist combines news distributed by mass media with his own cultural identity as well as Art History to produce works of art that seem familiar, but at the same time take a unique position within the tradition of contemporary painting. His themes range from intimate renderings of general relationships to his Greek origin where refugees, but also navigation and the sea as such are a constant.
