Die Galerie Brigitte Weiss zeigt in einer weiteren Einzelausstellung neue Werke des in East Lothian (Schottland) lebenden Künstlers Graeme Todd
(geb. 1962 in Glasgow).


Graeme Todd verbindet in seinen Bildern Zeichnungen, eingefärbte Lackschichten und dreidimensionale Effekte zu illusionistischen Raumerlebnissen. Zu seiner jüngsten Werkgruppe, in der zeichnerische Elemente dominieren und zum Ausstellungstitel äussert sich der Künstler wie folgt:

.....IN THIS MOST RECENT BODY OF WORK ,I HAVE MADE EXTENSIVE REFERENCE TO THE WOODCUTS AND ETCHINGS OF ALBRECHT DURER.THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY GRAPHIC WORLD OF DURER IS EXPLORED IN A 'MICRO MAN' FASHION... SEEING THE DETAIL AND NEVER THE PLAN, MOVING AROUND THE IMAGE SECTION BY SECTION, LIFTING INFORMATION AND RELEASING IT FROM IS ORIGINAL CONTEXT TO MAKE A NEW CONFIGURATION. IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY IN A STUDIO ON THE EAST COAST OF SCOTLAND THE INFORMATION SO GLEANED IS RE-DRAWN IN INK ON ACRYLIC PAINTED PANEL AND IS MIXED WITH THE VERNACULAR LANDSCAPE OF EAST LOTHIAN.......

....TWO KEY PAINTINGS IN THIS COLLECTION: K.W.A.N.G AND W.H.A.E,[ BOTH 2007] MAKE PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO "THE ABDUCTION OF A YOUNG WOMAN ON A UNICORN FROM 1516, AND FEATURE DIRECT REFERENCES TO DURERS VISION OF THE MYTHOLOGICAL BEAST........

........"WE COULD BE FACE TO FACE WITH A UNICORN AND NOT KNOW FOR CERTAIN WHAT IT WAS. WE KNOW THAT SUCH AND SUCH AN ANIMAL WITH A MANE IS A HORSE AND THAT SUCH AND SUCH AN ANIMAL WITH HORNS IS A BULL. BUT WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE UNICORN IS LIKE"....(JORGE LUIS BORGES, LABYRINTHS)

THE NAME K.W.A.N.G IS CORRUPTED FROM THE ACRONYM Q.A.N.G.O WHICH APPEARED IN BRITISH LIFE IN THE 1990'S, MEANING 'QUASI AUTONIMOUS NON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATION'. FEW PEOPLE REALLY KNEW WHAT THEY WERE AND MOST LIKELY DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE...
